Backlot Stunt Coaster

Candy Apple Grove's launch coaster began life as a licensed movie tie-in during Kings Dominion's final season under Paramount Parks ownership. Premier Rides had already built nearly identical LIM-launch coasters at Kings Island and Canada's Wonderland in 2005, themed to the 2003 film The Italian Job, and Kings Dominion followed in 2006 with its own version, Italian Job: Turbo Coaster, built on the site of the former Diamond Falls shoot-the-chute ride.

The ride casts riders as stunt drivers, launching from 0 to 40 mph in three seconds into a mock parking-garage helix while a police helicopter and simulated gunfire chase the train through banked turns and a lengthy tunnel — a compressed, theatrical version of the film's climactic car chase.

Cedar Fair's 2006 purchase of the Paramount Parks chain came with an expiring film license, and at the end of the 2007 season the park dropped the Italian Job branding entirely, renaming the ride Backlot Stunt Coaster for 2008 and toning down some of the movie-specific special effects while keeping the same helicopter-chase staging and layout.

Nearly two decades later, the physical ride, launch sequence, and stunt-chase pacing remain unchanged from 2006; only the story wrapped around the same three-second launch has been generalized from a licensed blockbuster into an unbranded backlot chase.
