Tumbili

Tumbili's site had a quieter previous life as the Crypt, a Huss Top Spin flat ride themed to Tomb Raider that Kings Dominion removed after the 2020 season. In August 2021 the park announced a bigger plan: retheming its aging Safari Village area — itself a remnant of the park's original 1975 Lion Country Safari — into Jungle X-Pedition, an archaeological-research-outpost land anchored by a new coaster from S&S Worldwide.

That coaster, Tumbili, took its name from the Swahili word for "monkey" and became Virginia's first 4D Free Spin coaster, a format that suspends riders on either side of the track in cars that flip independently and continuously using magnetic control technology rather than a fixed program. Because each car's spin depends on rider weight, position, and interaction, no two laps around the compact 112-foot layout play out quite the same way.

Construction moved quickly by park standards — the final piece of track went up in January 2022, barely five months after the retheme was announced — and Tumbili opened to the public on March 12, 2022, cruising above a rainforest canopy setting built around the fictional discovery of a jungle temple by "Professor Whey."

Tumbili remains a lower-capacity, higher-novelty ride compared to Jungle X-Pedition's larger steel coasters, but its unpredictable flipping motion and canopy-level views have made it a repeat-ride favorite since debuting alongside the area's retheme of the park's classic Avalanche bobsled coaster into Reptilian.
