Background

Kings Dominion announced a new Mack Rides Wild Mouse coaster for Candy Apple Grove in August 2001, and Ricochet opened the following March as the park's twelfth roller coaster — a compact layout of hairpin turns and a 50-foot first drop typical of the wild-mouse format, running ten single-car trains rather than the multi-car trains common on larger coasters.

Ricochet spent sixteen seasons in its original yellow, blue, and silver color scheme before Kings Dominion announced in February 2018 that it would be renamed and repainted as part of a broader Candy Apple Grove renovation built around the new Twisted Timbers hybrid coaster next door.

The ride reopened for the 2018 season as Apple Zapple, repainted green and brown to match its refreshed surroundings — the same physical layout, hairpin turns, and drop that had run under the Ricochet name since 2002, with only the branding and color scheme updated.

Apple Zapple remains one of Candy Apple Grove's family-friendly staples, letting riders as short as 44 inches experience its tight turns and sudden drops when accompanied by a supervising companion.
