Trailblazer

Trailblazer opened in 1974 as a family-friendly mine-train coaster, using the gentle-grade, switchback-heavy design Arrow Dynamics had refined over the previous decade at parks across the country. Its layout runs through short tunnels and rockwork styled after the surrounding Pioneer Frontier area, giving the ride more contextual scenery than most mine trains of its era typically received.

Despite its modest 42-foot height, Trailblazer reaches 45 mph at points in the layout, a noticeably peppier top speed than many family coasters built in the same style during the 1970s. That combination of low height with genuine speed has helped the ride hold up as a satisfying middle step for younger riders graduating from junior coasters toward the park's bigger steel attractions.

Now more than five decades old, Trailblazer remains one of the longer continuously operating rides in the park's lineup, having avoided the closures and conversions that have claimed several of its contemporaries elsewhere in the industry.
