Drop angle — why steeper feels scarier
Degrees past vertical change how long you freefall and how hard the valley hits. Height alone does not tell that story.
Reading the stats
Drop angle measures how steep the first drop (or a featured drop) is, usually in degrees from horizontal. A 60° drop feels bold; something near or past 90° (beyond vertical) adds a moment where the track tips past straight down — common marketing for dive coasters and some modern hypers.
Steeper drops stretch the freefall sensation and can raise peak positive G in the valley if speed builds aggressively. A taller but shallower drop may feel floatier and longer. That is why two 200-foot coasters can feel unrelated.
On Coaster Atlas, drop angle sits with engineering / Pro depth when parks publish it. If the field is empty, use ride type clues: dive and “beyond vertical” language usually signal a steeper profile than a classic out-and-back first drop.
