Knott's Boardwalk area lost its dueling Windjammer Surf Racers coasters after just a few seasons when persistent mechanical and structural issues forced their closure, leaving the park searching for a flagship replacement that could anchor the same footprint with more reliable technology.

Intamin answered with a launch system nobody had used before: hydraulic acceleration, which uses pressurized hydraulic fluid rather than cables or linear motors to fling the train from 0 to 82 mph in just 2.3 seconds. Xcelerator's single train then climbs a 205-foot vertical top hat before a spiraling descent, covering 2,200 feet of track built around a full 1950s hot-rod theme, complete with a restored classic Chevy on display near the entrance.

The hydraulic launch's testing pushed Xcelerator's debut back from an initial spring target to June 22, 2002, but the technology proved influential — Intamin refined the same hydraulic-launch concept for larger coasters at other parks in the years that followed, tracing its roots directly back to Xcelerator.

More than two decades later, Xcelerator remains Knott's tallest and fastest coaster and one of the most recognizable launch coasters in Southern California, its hot-rod theme and abrupt acceleration still drawing lines throughout the Boardwalk's operating day.
