Background

Knott's closed the towering Perilous Plunge water ride in 2012 after years of mechanical strain on its 115-foot drop mechanism, freeing up prime real estate in the Boardwalk area for a full redevelopment rather than a like-for-like replacement.

Mack Rides supplied a large-park wild mouse coaster for the site, sending trains through tight, high-banked switchback turns and sudden lateral direction changes across 1,214 feet of track at up to 28 mph — a compact footprint that let Knott's fit a genuine thrill coaster into the reclaimed Perilous Plunge site alongside other new Boardwalk attractions.

Coast Rider opened May 25, 2013, with a name and surf-inspired paint scheme that plays off GhostRider's branding elsewhere in the park, though the ride's mechanical layout is a standard Mack wild mouse rather than a themed experience tied to the coastal name.

The ride remains one of the more accessible thrill coasters on the Boardwalk, with a 44-inch accompanied-height minimum that lets it bridge the gap between Knott's family attractions and its larger steel coasters.
