A mid-course brake run (MCBR) slows or stops the train partway through the layout. The primary job is block safety — holding a train until the next section clears. Some designs also use the pause to set up a second lift, a launch, or a dramatic restart.
Trims are the lighter cousin: short magnetic segments that bleed speed without a full hold. Riders notice both when a finale feels softer than the brochure promised. Magnetic fins make modern holds smoother than older skid brakes.
Good layouts recover with a strong second half after an MCBR; weak ones feel like two short rides glued together. When trip reports argue about “trims,” they are debating pacing consistency — log weather and train conditions when a credit felt soft.
