Banshee

When Son of Beast — Kings Island's ill-fated hybrid wood coaster — closed for good in 2012 after years of intermittent operation, the park needed a credible replacement for the Action Zone footprint it left behind.

Bolliger & Mabillard answered with Banshee, an inverted coaster themed to a wailing Celtic messenger of death rather than any carryover from Son of Beast. Riders climb a 167-foot lift before a 150-foot curved first drop launches them through seven inversions — a dive loop, a vertical loop that circles back around the lift structure itself, a zero-gravity roll, twin batwings, an outside loop, a spiral, and a closing in-line roll — covering 4,124 feet of track at speeds Kings Island lists up to 68 mph.

At its 2014 debut the park billed Banshee as the world's longest steel inverted coaster. The layout's pacing is unusual for the model too: top speed doesn't arrive on the first drop but at the midpoint of the course, after riders have already cleared several inversions.

Banshee remains one of the park's most decorated modern coasters and, alongside Diamondback and Orion, forms the backbone of Kings Island's post-2000s steel lineup.
