Darkness, mist, and close supports — how designers add drama without changing the stats sheet.
Elements & inversions
Tunnels remove visual reference so speed and drops feel stronger than the numbers. Mist, strobes, and sound design amplify that effect. A short tunnel before a drop can out-scare a taller open hill.
Near-miss moments — supports, walls, or themers that pass close to the train — create flinch without adding G. They are layout theater, not a separate force axis. Mine trains and themed steels use them heavily; hypers use them sparingly after the big airtime hills.
Stats pages rarely capture tunnels well. POV and trip notes do. If two coasters share height and speed but one feels “scarier,” check for enclosed sections and interaction beats.
