Lap bars vs over-the-shoulder restraints
How different restraints change comfort, airtime, and who can ride — without changing the physics of the track.
Elements & inversions
Lap bars hold you at the thighs and waist. Over-the-shoulder restraints (OTSRs) add padded bars or a vest over the chest and shoulders. Both keep you in the train; neither “creates” airtime — the track does. What changes is how free your upper body feels and how much contact you notice in laterals and hangtime.
Modern soft vests and flexible OTSRs aim for OTSR security with less headbang than rigid 1990s bars. Lap-bar-only trains (common on hypers and many woods) usually feel freer on airtime hills. Inverted and wing coasters often need shoulder systems because of how you hang relative to the track.
On Coaster Atlas, restraint type rarely appears as a primary stat, but enthusiast write-ups and your own notes matter. If a ride felt “headbangy,” note the restraint and seat row — that combination often explains comfort more than height or speed alone.
