How lift hills work
Chain dogs, anti-rollbacks, and motors that creep the train up while you hear that familiar click-click-click.
Most coasters use a motorized chain on the lift hill. A chain dog under the train engages the chain; the motor turns sprockets that pull the chain (and train) uphill.
You hear clicking from anti-rollback pawls — they ratchet on a toothed rail so the train cannot roll backward down the lift if the chain slips.
Alternatives include cable lifts (often faster and quieter on long lifts), elevator lifts (vertical platforms), and tilt lifts on some modern installs. Each trades speed, maintenance, and visual drama differently.
The lift is not just height — it sets dispatch timing and how quickly the ride can cycle trains through the course.
