Elements & inversions
A helix is a spiral of track — often descending — that wraps the train through one or more revolutions without a full inversion. You stay mostly upright while the banking and curvature produce strong side force. Many out-and-back hypers and wooden coasters finish with a big helix to burn leftover speed.
Helixes feel “stuck to the side of the car” more than “upside down.” Tall, wide hellices can feel majestic; tight ones feel aggressive and can amplify rattles on older wood. Climbing hellices after a valley are less common but memorable when they appear.
When comparing layouts, a helix is a duration signal. It can add several seconds of continuous force after the big hills are done. Pair helix mentions with length and speed: a short ride ending in a helix may feel denser than a long cruise with the same drop height.
